52,000 workers in the U.S. tech sector got fired.
• Musk cut 50% of Twitter
• Facebook fired 11,000
• Amazon froze hiring
Take these 10 steps now to survive and even thrive as a leader:
#1 Increase your productivity
First and foremost, you need to increase your productivity and your team's productivity.
It's not the time to slack off.
Find ways to:
• increase output
• deliver results faster
• make processes more efficient
#2 Align with your boss
Have an honest discussion with your manager
Ask questions like:
• where should you focus?
• what decisions are you allowed to make?
• what does success look like in the short term?
You want autonomy without overstepping your boundaries.
#3 Be flexible
After the previous discussions, you might end up with new tasks and responsibilities.
Be open about them.
Even if something doesn't align with your goals or seems like a step back, it's ok to let people know you are willing to make sacrifices in the short term.
#4 Tighten the relationship with your team
If you have a team, the worst thing you can do is not engage with them enough.
Your team's success determines your success.
• understand their needs
• align their goals with your goals
• get involved in solving their problems
#5 Build relationships
Networking is everything in business and life in general.
Aside from your team and boss, talk to:
• peers from other branches
• people from other departments
• friends from competitor companies
Information travels fast and in unpredictable ways.
#6 Be creative
Now's the time to shine.
Let's be honest, 90% of corporate work is following procedures and talking to people.
Come up with ideas for:
• new products
• entering new markets
• cutting costs without cutting people
It's time to bring in that extra 10%.
#7 Double down on your strengths
Take a moment to think about why they hired or promoted you.
• leadership
• client relationship
• team management
Focus on those assets and find ways to use them as much as you can.
#8 Enhance your skills
It's never too late to learn.
Instead of coming home to Netflix and a couple of beers:
• learn programming
• enroll in a sales course
• read a book on project management
New skills always mean new opportunities. Inside the company or not.
#9 Bring hope
In all the conversations you have, be realistic but optimistic.
Everyone will be gloomy and come up with apocalyptic scenarios.
Be the one who brings a ray of hope into the room.
#10 Update your CV
"Hope for the best, prepare for the worst"
Make sure your CV and Linkedin profile are up to date:
• strengths
• acquired skills
• accomplishments
Bonus: Start asking for recommendations from people you've worked with in the past.
TL;DR - 10 actions to keep your job
#1 Be flexible
#2 Bring hope
#3 Be creative
#4 Update your CV
#5 Build relationships
#6 Enhance your skills
#7 Align with your boss
#8 Increase your productivity
#9 Double down on your strengths
#10 Tighten the relationship with your team
