(a) First-year grad students may not be the right persons to contact because they're facing a transformation and may discourage you based on the "shege" they're passing through. But contact them anyways.
(b) It's best to contact those who have spent more than a year in grad sch
...they understand the system better. A 3rd year PhD student told someone I know "if you had contacted me when you got admission here, I would have advised you to go elsewhere" 🫣 (because the guy got 3 offers).
A semester into the program, the new student ran into depression🀐
(c) Current students will help you make wise admission/funding decisions.
(d) Two friends got admitted into two schools in New York (NY) and Alabama (AL). The funding in NY is more than AL. One went to NY, the other went to AL. Today, the one in AL saves more than the one in NY.
(e) Current students will give you tips on the professors to contact.
(f) They'll tell you the exact cost of living that is more realistic than what you see on Google.
(g) They'll also tell what you're likely to be earning out of that huge stipend you're seeing on the website.
...You may see that your stipend worth $30,000 annually. Don't celebrate yet until current students confirm that. You'll be shocked that at the end of every month you'll receive around $1,000+ while someone with $15,000 annual funding will be earning higher.
Graduate school is tough, time consuming, and energy-sapping. Therefore, you deserve the best pay possible πŸ’°.
I have set up a YouTube channel where I share my personal grad school journey and scholarship application tips.
