Act of service was one of the traits of the Prophet SAW.  Some people accepted Islam due to this trait.
He went out of his ways to help people. If a person went to him for help and he couldn't, he'd ask someone else to help. He was found to always be a helper.

A person doesn't necessarily have to ask for help before we do. If it's apparent to you that this person needs help, kindly render it.
Ibn Taymiyyah rahimallah used to go out helping people because he knew that by doing that, Allah would help him too.

Abu Huraira reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Allah continues to fulfill the needs of the servant as long as he fulfills the needs of his brother.”
