How I do my KDP Keyword Research using Publisher Rocket (A Thread)⏬
In this thread I'm going to show you how I use Publisher Rocket and why it's so important for KDP success
If you've made lots of KDP books but can't seem to sell them, you're going to want to read this🚀🚀
First of all, Publisher Rocket does cost $97 dollars, BUT it's worth every penny!!
TRUST ME
Using the right keywords is one of the main reasons I've been able to grow my KDP to over $100,000 royalties and these all come from Publisher Rocket

So before I go into detail on Publisher Rocket, I want to provide a bit of context and explain why keyword research is so important to KDP👇👇
In short, keywords are how people discover your book in the first place
You could make the best book in the entire world, but no one is going to buy it if they can't find it
Not doing keyword research correctly is why 99% of people fail on KDP
The main goal of keyword research is to find keywords (search terms) that a lot of customers are searching for, but not many other sellers are using
This will allow your book to rank first (or as high as possible) when a customer searches for it on Amazon
Unsuccessful publishers don't do their keyword research correctly, and just use keywords that EVER OTHER PUBLISHER IN THAT NICHE IS USING
Because of this, their books never rank and they never make any sales
It's easy to find keywords that have high demand, but the obvious ones all have super high competition
Instead, you want to be using keywords in your title and 7 keyword boxes that have high demand and low competition
THIS IS WHERE PUBLISHER ROCKET COMES IN
All you need to do on Publisher Rocket is to put in a broad keyword (I've used 'football book' here) and it shows a list of related keywords along with a number of useful metrics
In my opinion, the final 3 metrics (earnings, searches and competition) are the main ones to look at
Publisher Rocket instantly colour-codes the final 2 metrics to make life super easy for you
If searches/month is red, it means not enough people are searching for it
If competitive score is red, it means there's too much competition
If you notice in the pictures above, some searches/month numbers that are red are higher than others which are green
How does that work?
Well, Publisher Rocket also factors in conversion rate and here's how that works:
Conversion rate is as important as search volume:
800 searches with a 1% conversion rate = 8 sales
200 searches with a 20% conversion rate = 40 sales
Therefore, a good keyword needs to have a balance of search exposure and conversion
But Publisher Rocket has got this covered
You therefore only really need to look at the colours and also just be aware of the average monthly earnings too (higher the better)
In this example, 'football books for teenage boys 13-15' would be a great keyword
BUT ONLY if it is relevant to your book's audience
With this in mind, you might want to also use Publisher Rocket to help with Niche Research too
Because you know there is good demand/conversion for a football book for teenage boys aged 13-15, you could make a book for this niche and lead with the keyword in your title
So if I had made a football book that was suitable for teenagers and above, 'football books' would be an exact keyword I'd avoid, whereas 'football books for teenage boys 13-15' that would definitely be used
Data driven keywords > Keywords you 'think' are good
For my keyword research, I would then spend a good hour or 2 in Publisher Rocket typing in as many broad keywords related to my book and make a list of all the results with green searches and competition
The best of these would then be used in my title and keyword boxes
By the end of this research I will have a list of keywords related to my books that tick 2 boxes:
- People are searching for them a lot (and/or converting well)
- Not many competitors are using them
I'll therefore rank high when people search these on Amazon = more sales
If I'd just used keywords like 'football books', no one would be able to find my book
But now, I'm going to rank as high as possible for search terms I know people are searching for
THIS IS HOW YOU MAKE MONEY WITH KDP
Start using data
BONUS:
Publisher Rocket also shows thousands of categories you can add your book to that Amazon aren't showing
It also shows you how many sales/day you need to get a 'best seller' badge in that category
Find categories with a low 'sales to #1' and get those best seller badges
I hope you found this thread useful and now know how to optimise your keyword research
