Authenticity of the narrations from salaf allowing backbiting the oppressive ruler?
Shaykh Abdul-Qadir al-Junayd حفظه الله
First narration from Al-Hasan al-Basri
“Three people who have no gheebah, the innovator, the wicked sinner who proclaims his evil-doing and the oppressive ruler.”
In its chain is Sharik bin Abdullah: weak.
Abu Bakr al-Daynuri reported it in his book with a very weak chain. Al-Bayhaqi also reported it in his book and in its chain are three weak narrators. The narrator who narrated from Al-Hasan, Sulayman bin Muslim, is majhool (unknown).
Abdullah bin Ahmad bin Hanbal reported it but with another wording. Abu al-A’la al-Attar Al-Hamadhani reported it from the narration of Abdullah bin Ahmad but its chain is weak because of its disconnection.
Abu Hatim Ar-Razi said: “Ibn Shudhb
didn’t see or hear from al-Hasan.”
Ibn Abi Ad-Dunya reported it in his book. Its chain is very weak because kharijah Ibn mus'ab is matrook al-hadith (discarded)
It’s also been narrated by more than one from al-Hasan regarding this narration:
- either mentioning the innovator only
- mentioning the open sinner only
- or both of them only.
Second narration from Ibrahim An-Nakha’i
Abdurrahman bin Mughra’ is differed upon in regards to his reliability when he narrates from al-Aʽmash. Ad-Darimi also narrated it without mentioning the ‘oppressive ruler’
Ibn Abi Ad-Dunya also reported the narration of Ibrahim An-Nakha’i:
“Three people who have no gheeba: the oppressor, open sinner and innovator.”
Ahmed bin 'Imran al-Akhnsani: weak.
Third narration from Ubaydillah al-Hassan. Harb al-Kirmani reported it and in his chain is his shaykh whose biography can’t be found. Other shaykh is his uncle Arim. It’s not known if he narrated from him before becoming disordered in mind or after.
Fourth narration Yahya bin Abi Kathir
It was reported by al-Harawi in his book. Abu Zayd can’t be identified. Anyone who deemed Abu Ya’qūb, the shaykh of al-Harawi, to be trustworthy wasn’t found.
Firth narration Abdurrahman bin Udhainah It was reported by Harb al-Kirmani. Chain is weak due to disconnection or I’dal (two or more successive narrators dropped)
Between the death of Abdurrahman bin Udhainah and Ziyad bin Ar-Rabi’is 110 years.
Sixth narration from Mansur al-Mu’tamir. Ibn Abi Ad-Dunya reported it in his book. He was asked, If I am fasting do I insult the ruler? He said, no. He was then asked, [Do] I insult Ahl al-Ahwa? He said, yes.
In its chain is a weak rawi and a mudalis
Abdul-Qadir al-Junayd says this athar does not allow backbiting the oppressive ruler, but prohibits it. The reason he highlighted the defect is that some of them claimed what is understood from the narration it is allowed to backbite him when not fasting.
Seventh narration from Sufyan bin ‘Uyaynah. Al-Bayhaqi reported it in his book. In this chain, Zakariya bin Dalwayhi, is not classified as being a reliable or unreliable narrator by hadith scholars.
Majhool al-hal (condition unknown)
They leave what is clear and evident from the sunnah in dealing with the rulers and hold onto weak narrations that conforms with their desires. Miserable bunch.
