A seismic damper device developed for the typical modern Japanese home (two story stick frame). Designed to last 90 years (three times longer than a typical stick frame house). I believe they cost about $2,200 each and you need four usually. Tested to M7.0, no damage at all.
I looked around. In the 2016 Kumamoto quake M7.3 quake there were 132 buildings with these dampers installed. Most were unharmed and a few had some minor cosmetic damage. All were inhabitable.
Two more systems, combined restorer and damping effect. Since quake damage is cumulative these systems focus on restoring the house to its original shape after a quake. These are fairly inexpensive. In the Kumamoto quake thousands of homes had these, at most the wall paper tore.
If you have a larger building your seismic dampers are considerably larger as well. Here's one covering the entire side of a building. In a large quake this building will move several feet, back and forth.
