93% of business owners struggle with obsessing over work.
I am one of them, and it strained my marriage in the past.
These 5 habits helped me find balance:
Before I get to the list:
I believe my tendency to get lost in work has contributed greatly to my success.
But, it also created tension and separation in my relationships.
Without my family, I’m nothing. So I needed to find a solution.
These habits saved my marriage:
#1: Follow a rigorous schedule.
It may seem weird to schedule family time or date night, but if it’s not in the calendar, it’s not going to happen.
Just like a business meeting, I planned ahead with my wife and we put our time in the books.
Now there’s always time for us.
#2: Leverage an assistant.
I would give up everything else in business before I’d give up my assistant.
A great assistant removes many hours of work off my plate every week.
If you own a business, an assistant is a must for work-life balance.
#3: Stay connected.
I can get so deep into work that the building could be on fire and I wouldn’t know it.
My wife sounds the alarm and keeps me in check. Open communication with her is key.
When I lose sight, she’s sure to reign me back in.
#4: Get in “me time”.
I can’t be great for my family if I neglect myself.
Focus on these areas:
• Healthy diet
• Good night's sleep
• Drink plenty of water
• 30-minute walks outdoors
Prioritize these to ensure you’re productive at work AND present with your loved ones.
#5: Practice mindfulness.
There are many approaches here, you’ll need to find what works for you.
The best options are:
• Journaling
• Meditation
• Breathing
• Hobbies
• Therapy
These will help you be present in the moment + separate your work brain from your life brain.
That's a wrap.
