F*ck building an audience
Having an audience is useless if you do it wrong
Here are 6 tips for creating content that drives likes *and* sales (tip 1 is very important)
I just crossed 96,000 Twitter followers
But I’m not here to “build an audience”—I’m building a business
If you wanna build the business you deserve, you’ve gotta get people to stop scrolling and pay attention
You must be un-ignorable
Here’s how to do that:
1/ Don’t “Build an Audience”—Build Intent
Growing followers fast will feed your ego
Attracting future buyers will feed your family
And—despite what the audience-building gurus may promise—having a big audience won’t automatically lead to riches
Just ask Arii...
Arii is an (in)famous Instagrammer
She went viral—in a bad way—when she launched a t-shirt line to her 2M followers...
And couldn’t even sell 36 shirts 😬
Having lots of followers doesn’t make you “an influencer”
Influence is about 1 thing: trust
You earn trust by:
1️⃣ Deeply understanding buyers
You need to know what makes them tick, click, and why they buy (eg. pains, goals, desires)
2️⃣ Continually showing up to serve them
2/ Make *Smart* Bets
When it comes to audience growth, some people will tell you to make lots of noise in the beginning to see what works
I disagree
What’s a better way?
Start with scrappy research and a deep understanding of buyer psychology
Mega successful online biz experts like @SahilBloom and @AlexHormozi are proud students of psychology
Hormozi attracted 1.9M followers in 12 months
The first 3 books on Hormozi’s top 10 list are about...
Buyer psychology
The lesson?
Don’t “make noise”—make smart bets
3/ Choose the Best Land to Build On
Should you hop on the TikTok train or double-down on LinkedIn?
Is email really dead or is it the holy grail of marketing?
If you wanna decide where to build an audience, these aren’t the right questions to ask
Try these questions instead...
Ask yourself:
1. What am *I* good at?
If you hate being on video but love writing, YouTube shorts probably ain’t for you (even if it’s “so hawt right now”)
2. Where do *I* enjoy hanging out?
Despite what you’ve heard... buyers hang out everywhere
Choose channels *you* like
4/ Learn From the Natives
Chances are that you’re not the first person to build on this land
Some smart people came before you and you can learn a lot by studying their strategies
Use tools like @sparktoro to identify who already has your ideal buyers’ attention...
Success leaves clues
Find the people and brands your audience loves and reverse-engineer their approach
Pay attention to phrases and formats
Use tools like @TwemexApp to find popular posts and scan the comments for insights
Let their audience tell you what works (and doesn’t)
5/ Engineer Small Victories
Everyone says to “be consistent” with content creation
Few tell you this: Spending hours creating good content that gets ignored feels super sh*tty
It’s wayyy easier to commit to creating content consistently if you’re having fun
So what do you do?
Hijack your brain to build a habit loop
Rather than posting content and waiting for likes and comments to “reward” you with a hit of dopamine (aka happy chemicals)...
Design your own reward system
Ex:
Every post = $1 in your fun fund
Every 20 followers = 20 mins of Candy Crush
6/ Find Allies
Ready for only true “secret” of building an online empire?
None of the big players are doing it alone
The fastest growing peeps are all using:
👉 Engagement pods (formally or informally)
👉 Peer masterminds
👉 Co-creating
If you wanna grow fast, grow together
On that note...
Do you wanna become un-ignorable?
I’m teaming up with @GrowthTactics on a new thang
I can’t reveal too much yet, so I’ll say this...
