Rawat decided to hold on to his post and fight when his company eventually decided to withdraw.
Rushing from position to position, Rawat held off the enemy for 72 hours until the Chinese captured a local supplier, who told them that they were facing only one fighter.

The Chinese then stormed Rawat's position while Rawat shot himself with his last round of ammunition. Chinese took off his severed head until one Chinese officer inspired by his bravery decided to return it along with his brass bust after the war was over.
Jaswantโs comrades Lnk Trilok Singh Negi & Rfn Gopal Singh were awarded Vir Chakra while Rawat was awarded Mahavir Chakra.
