My personal goal setting system + [TEMPLATE]:
Here's a breakdown of how it works πŸ‘‡
+ Google Sheets link: πŸ“Š
Goal setting is a tricky thing.
And not always a good thing.
Don’t get me wrong,
I firmly believe everyone should have goals.
But we need to be careful.
An obsession with the outcome of our goals can lead to dissatisfaction with life.
We start saying things like:
β€œEverything will be good once I get X”
The key here is to shift our focus to the process.
When I built this system, I had a few things in mind.
I wanted it to be:
1. Focused on the process (see above)
2. Simple and fast to update
3. Flexible
4. Identity-based (jamesclear.com)
Why simple and fast to use?
As soon as a system becomes overcomplicated, the rate of failure will skyrocket. I wanted to be able to just jump into this spreadsheet once per week, and be done in 5 to 10 minutes.
Why flexible?
People change, goals change. Consistency is key, but we have to be able to make small adaptations along the way.
Why identity-based?
β€œThe key to building lasting habits is focusing on creating a new identity first. Your current behaviors are simply a reflection of your current identity."
Here it is: docs.google.com
(make a copy if you want to use it)
Here's how it works πŸ‘‡
Basically there are 2 main areas:
1. Habit breakdown + tracking
2. Weekly/monthly review
It’s pretty straightforward, but I’ll walk through my thinking for each block.
1. Habit breakdown + tracking
Who am I?
This is where we base the goal/habit on the identity we want to build.
Monthly goal
For me, monthly goals are perfect. It’s not too short of a time window, but it’s also close enough to keep me excited.
(cont.)
Daily habit
This is key to making our goals actionable. We want to be as specific as possible here. These may change each week (or even in a couple days). Update as necessary.
Tracking
This is a powerful visual incentive, as well as a way to keep our awareness high.
2. Weekly/monthly review
What worked?
Which habits worked and why?
What didn’t work?
Which habits DIDN’T work and why? (you get the idea)
(cont.)
What to change?
Now, this is an important one. Here is where you reflect and make adjustment for the coming week. I love this because even if I have a bad week, Sunday always feels like a fresh start.
Monthly review
Same as weekly, but for the month.
Additional Notes:
- Best viewed at 50% (if someone can tell me how to shrink it please DM me)
- If you want to do more months, just duplicate the sheet and press CTRL+H to replace the month names.
- I'm aware my Excel skills are weak AF, but this sheet has helped me out a ton
That's a wrap!
