Istihlal: the act of making Halal, what Allah made haram can take a person outside of Islam.

Desires: having Haram desires and inclinations but not acting on them is not sinful. Although it can be caused by sin and can lead to sin, and certainly corrupts the heart if a person dwells on those desires and seeks not to move away from them.
Major sins do not take a person outside of the fold of Islam. (Except for Shirk).
But committing major sins and then claiming something that is haram by consensus of the scholars, is in fact not haram, that is what endangers a persons Islam.

Better to be a sinner who realises he is sinning, hides it and wants to rectify oneself, than to be an arrogant sinner who denies Allahβs laws and seeks to twist and change Allahβs words, rejecting their agreed upon meaning.
