1. Varicoceles (swelling of the testis veins) is a major cause of low sperm count & infertility in men.
Sperm cells are very fragile.
Varicoceles create abnormal temp inside the testis which might kill some sperm or reduce...
sperm quality.
Treat your varicoceles. Don't forget to check your testis regularly and when you feel something like a bag of worms, that may indicate varicoceles.
2. Analysis of smokers' semen show the presence of tobacco in their sperm.
This lowers sperm count & sperm ability to swim actively to fertilize a woman's egg.
So smoking damages a man's sperm in such a way that fertilization becomes difficult.
Avoid smoking.
Alcohol use. Drinking alcohol can lower testosterone levels and cause decreased sperm production.
3. Marijuana use.
Regular taking marijuana in any form can reduce your sperm count by as much as a one-third!
Weed 🌿 lowers the level of testosterone, a hormone needed by the body to produce sperm.
Weed also slows down sperm motility.
Beware of weed!..4
4. Hot baths & sauners.
Bathing with hotwater frequently exposes your testicles to heat, which reduces your sperm count.
Same thing happens to men who use saunas often.
In fact, if you're worried about infertility, it's best to bath with cold water.
5. Phone use
Heat & radiation from phones can damage sperm.
Studies shown that using a phone for as little as 1 hr a day 'cooks sperm'.
Men are hence advised to keep their cell phones as far away from the testes as possible e.g. hold in your hand or back pocket instead of...
front pocket.
6. occupational causes like men who work in high temperature environment eg welders, bakers, ceramic oven operators, submariners end up cooking their testis indirectly leading to reduced overall sperm count.
7. Men who work in sedentary work positions and end up sitting for extended periods eg office work, professional drivers, long commutes with heated car seats/floor end up cooking their testis too further leading to reduced sperm count hence infertility.
8. Lifestyles which lead to increased obesity & fat abdominal deposition, tight fitting underwears & pants plus long distance cycling, application of laptops on the thighs for long while using them. All the above further lead to raised testicular temp leading to infertility.
9. Infection.
Some infections can interfere with sperm production or sperm health or can cause scarring that blocks the passage of sperm. These include inflammation of the epididymis (epididymitis) or testicles (orchitis) and some STIs, including gonorrhea or HIV.
10. Ejaculation problems.
Retrograde ejaculation(RE) occurs when semen enters the bladder during orgasm instead of emerging out of the tip of the penis. Other conditions can coz RE or lack of ejaculation,eg Diabetes, spinal injuries, & surgery of the bladder, prostate or urethra
11. Antibodies that attack sperm. Anti-sperm antibodies are immune system cells that mistakenly identify sperm as harmful invaders and attempt to destroy them.
13. Hormone imbalances.
The hypothalamus, pituitary & testicles produce hormones that are necessary to create sperm. Alterations in these hormones, as well as from other systems such as the thyroid and adrenal gland, may impair sperm production.
14. Undescended testicles.
During fetal development one or both testicles sometimes fail to descend from the abdomen into the sac that normally contains the testicles (scrotum). Decreased fertility is more likely in men with this condition.
15. Chromosome defects.
Inherited disorders such as Klinefelter's syndrome, cystic fibrosis, Kallmann's syndrome & Kartagener's syndrome cause abnormal development of the male reproductive organs.
16.Prior surgeries.
Certain surgeries might prevent you from having sperm in your ejaculate, including vasectomy, inguinal hernia repairs, scrotal or testicular surgeries, prostate surgeries, and large abdominal surgeries performed for testicular and rectal cancers, among others
Finally, some men can be exposed to industrial chemicals that destroy sperm.
These include benzenes, toluene, xylene, herbicides, pesticides, organic solvents, some painting materials, heavy metal like lead, & exposure to radiation or X-rays.

Protect your fertility by avoiding things that lower sperm count & quality:
• Don't smoke
• Limit alcohol
• No illicit drugs
• Don't take unprescribed drugs
• Keep a healthy weight
• Avoid heat in your genitals
• Manage stress
• Avoid pesticides, heavy metals & toxins.
