How to reset your brain (without drugs or therapy):
Ever wish your mind had a reset button?
I know I did.
I wanted to clear out my:
- negative thoughts
- bad mental habits
- ugly self-talk
Sadly, there is no such magic button.
But, a reset is possible if you follow these steps:
It's first important to determine whether you have a fixed or growth mindset.
Here's a test if you want to find out:
biglifejournal.com
Basically,
Growth mindset:
We can improve our intelligence, talents, and abilities through practice.
Fixed mindset:
These traits are stable and unchangeable over time.
Carol Dweck's book "Mindset" goes deep into this topic.
If you are "fixed mindset"
β€” I highly recommend reading this book
If you are "growth mindset"
β€” follow these next steps:
1. Decide on an ideal mindset you want to achieve
Ask yourself:
- How would I like to handle difficult situations?
- How would I like to deal with criticism?
- How would I like to perceive myself?
Use these questions to build your framework.
Write down your answers.
2. Identify limiting beliefs
Now that you know your ideal mindset.
It's time to pinpoint the limiting beliefs that have kept you from reaching it.
For each answer in step 1:
- Write the limiting beliefs that pop up when you imagine yourself as that person.
3. Reframe distortions
A limiting belief is a cognitive distortion picked up at some point in your life.
They can result from:
- An abusive childhood
- Mental health challenges
- Comparing oneself to others
I want you to take each limiting belief and reframe it:
Examples:
I am bad with money
--> I've made mistakes with money, but I'm working to improve
I can't do anything right
--> I'm not perfect, but I've done many good things in my life
I'm not good enough
--> I have lots of great traits such as XYZ
Write these down.
4. Use tools to reset limiting beliefs
Now that you have your reframed thoughts.
You want to solidify them in your mind.
You can do this through:
a) Discipline
b) Mindfulness
b) Conscious self-talk
a) Discipline
Nothing builds confidence in a belief faster than PROOF.
How do we get proof?
β€” Discipline.
Start small.
Daily actions that align with your ideal mindset.
Collect wins.
Prove to yourself that you're capable of being who you strive to be.
b) Mindfulness
Sometimes the best way to reset a belief is to DETACH from it.
Mindfulness gives you space from your thoughts.
It allows you to observe the stream of your mind.
Instead of drowning in it.
Try these:
- Yoga
- Meditation
- Breathing exercises
c) Conscious self-talk
I have an Apple note that contains my reframed thoughts.
Each morning, I say it 5 times OUT LOUD.
Yes.
It was awkward at first.
That's the feeling of breaking down distorted beliefs that have been there for years.
That's it.
This process WORKED for me.
Honestly looking back,
I feel like a completely different person.
You CAN change your mind.
It just takes work.
