Here's a sample of an EXCELLENT and well-written Statement of Purpose (SoP).
The writer (Rishabh Jain) got fully-funded Ph.D. offers from MIT (best university in the world) and University of Pennsylvania.
Let's discuss the strengths of this SoP.
RETWEET for applicants to seeπŸ”‚
Although an SoP is NOT the only admission requirement, it is an avenue for an applicant to market themselves to the professors on an admissions committee and convince them on why they should be admitted and funded.
Let's analyze Jain's SoP, paragraph-by-paragraph.
Paragraph 1: He identifies a significant and relevant problem that needs to be solved. He then ties this to WHY he wants to pursue a PhD in Materials Science and lets the admissions committee know WHY he's applying to MIT of all universities.
A brilliant opening, if you ask me!
Paragraph 2: He talks about his educational qualification, research, and teaching experiences and how all these have prepared and qualified him to pursue and excel in his chosen Ph.D. program/graduate school.
The admissions committee wants to know how PREPARED you are, show it.
Paragraph 3: He goes back to paragraph 1, picks the "WHY MIT" element and magnifies it. Here, he mentions the MIT professors whose interests align with his, and states that their works fascinate him
It shows you've done your due diligence & that you're a good FIT for the program
Paragraph 4: In conclusion, he wows the admission committee by letting them know that while his PhD will help him contribute to research in semiconductor devices, his minor in Economics will help him introduce those devices to the Indian market.
This is what we call "GHTMIE."
"GHTMIE" is an acronym for Go Home The Mass Is Ended🀣
Man wowed the admissions committee in just 4 paragraphs. I'm impressed.
No admissions committee will resist this kind of SoP
Study this SoP and my analysis, and write a powerful SoP that no admissions committee will resist
