This map shows you just how complex the situation inside the crusader-conquered Baltic areas was.
There was a long conflict between the Livonian Order and Bishop of Riga.
At some point the burghers of Riga supported by Bishop allied with pagan Lithuanians against the Order!
Also notice the powerful Bishopric of Dorpat on the map I posted!
They had long conflict with the Livonian Order (a branch of the Teutonic Order) as well.
They too allied with Lithuania at some point as well as with Victual Brothers pirates.
The pagan-Rigan alliance was formed in 1297.
During the tensions between Archbishop of Riga, burghers of Riga and the Livonian Order, the Grand duke of Lithuania Vytenis offered help to Riga and with his assistance, the Rigans defeated the Order near Turaida castle in 1298.
But the Livonian Order would strike back! As a branch of the Teutonic Order it received reinforcements from the Teutonic Knights and they defeated the Lithuanian-Rigan coalition at NeuermΓΌhlen that same year.
However the Lithuanian-Rigan alliance would still hold under Vytenis.
A Lithuanian garrison guarded Riga until 1313.
The alliance with Riga would help foster trade and commerce. Vytenis even made some vague promises of converting to Christianity, but that never happened.
