More new China nuclear!
Announced late last week, Huaneng has been approved (EIA report accepted) to move ahead with 4 more Hualong One reactors at Shidaowan NPP in Shandong.
This site is shaping up to become the most interesting/strategically important plant in China. ๐Ÿงต
The new reactors will join Huaneng's other reactors at the Shidaowan site: the High Temperature Gas Reactors which achieved first criticality ~a year ago.
They've been in extended testing since then, hitting several other technological milestones.
e.g. Earlier this month, industry media reported those HTGRs had begun supplying district heat via steam.
This functionality is an important part of its export value proposition, as customers for this tech may want to use the plants for desalination.

Countries that have signed framework agreements with China to work towards the possibility of importing the HTGR tech for energy + desalination needs include Jordan and Saudi Arabia, although those discussions are a little stale at this point and probably need to be refreshed.
Though many foreign sources refer to the HTGR at this site as "a reactor", CN media consistently refer to a "Unit 1" & "Unit 2" so I'm going with that. The equipment localization rate is ~93%
Huaneng (with Tsinghua) is currently working on a 600MW version of the HTGR too.
But Shidaowan is also home to the 2 CAP1400 demonstration reactors being built by SPIC.
News on the development of these reactors has been oddly quiet - normally Chinese nuclear industry likes to publicize every little installation milestone, but seems not in this case.
WNA:
I couldn't find any big construction milestones publicized from the builder or owner of the CAP1400s so far.
But here's a Shanghai Electric presser from last year saying they got the order for the 2 units' reactor internals, CRDM, one SG, one pressurizer, and 4 primary pumps.
And here's SPIC earlier this year claiming the CAP1400 supply chain is already 92% localized, with intentions to reach 100% (i.e. zero reliance on imported equipment) by next year.
By contrast, the Haiyang 2 CAP1000 was around ~63%
A massive amount of work into localization.
So, adding these 4 new Hualong Ones, the Shidaowan site will be home to three diff branches of advanced/next-gen CN nuclear power tech, all with export ambitions, and IP & equipment supply chains almost totally sheltered within China.
A very interesting plant site indeed.
