One of the sillier claims about the Chinese economy often made by foreign analysts is that views contrary to their own can be dismissed as those of “foreigners”. Their own views, they suggest – sometimes quite explicitly – are consistent with the views held by "the Chinese”.

This rather patronizing claim only shows how little time these analysts have actually spent in China. Anyone who lives here, and meets regularly with Chinese academics, bankers, government officials and business people, knows how silly (and even orientalist) it is.

Chinese analysts have been discussing and debating China’s deep and rising imbalances for years, and even more vigorously and aggressively than foreigners have. Any foreigner who thinks there is a "Chinese" view on the economy is just dealing in stereotypes.

A variant of this is the foreigner who claims he understands China deeply because he has spoken a few times to "the leadership". You would be too embarrassed to say this about the US, Brazil, India, Germany, or Nigeria, but somehow not when it comes to China.
