MMUO AGU [Episode 9]
The rhythm suddenly got faster and the ekpo faded out of sight before the mercenary's eyes. At virtually the same moment, he noticed red ribbons wrapping him upβ€”the spirit was behind him! In a flash, he grasped his amulet and dissolved out of the trap,
appearing several yards away.
The masquerade was already waiting for him when he landed, and the ribbons were readily swirling, when he swung his sword in a backward direction and drew blood. Or so he thought. The spirit danced quickly around him, leaving after-images that
faded too slowly, and gave the illusion of a dozen masquerades.
I can't predict where he will land. The targeted man slashed around the perimeter but only succeeded at maiming the air, which did nothing in his favor. He finally gave up on tracking the spirit and relaxed his
body. In the blink of an eye, he was completely tied up by the ribbons and prevented from moving. That, however, was not the height of his plight. The height was the ribbons began glowing a bright red.
Almost immediately, the mercenary burst into flames. Purple flames.
Ekpos had powerful dark powers that could only be matched by renowned shamans. The mercenary was no shaman, only a well-skilled warrior who employed various charms in his art.
The gods were fickle beings, as all omnipotent immortals should be. It was natural for humans to
covet their power, their wisdom, their divine might.
Power was sought by men to further their objectives, and to achieve it, they learned warcraft. They forged weapons of iron and mastered swordplay. When their vulnerability was flaunted in the field of battle, they resorted
to charms prepared by dibias to protect their penetrable skin, travel without walking, or hide from the naked eye.
A few more power-hungry mortals starved for more, and went as far as securing contracts from the Alusi, fickle beings as we earlier stated. Said contracts
involved the divine beings temporarily granting a portion of their power to the contract holders, known as ndi ji ofor, those who hold power.
The lesser contractor had a payment of making sacrifices required by their benefactor. Usually, a brief gift of omnipotence was paid
for with colossal immolations. All rulers held ancestral contracts with certain Alusi, technically giving them a truly divine mandate to rule.
