1. My childhood started in an era when information was discussion or travel based. There was no television, no crystal clear music systems.
People met with each other very often. Neighbourhoods were like extended families. Functions, celebrations, sorrows, animosity were shared!
Of course there were toxicity, but the broad toxin management was also a shared responsibility in that era as the level of human interaction was at a much larger scale…
2. Then started the second stage of my life. We saw arrival of television. It was super fun initially…
Entire neighbourhood gathered together and watched their favourite programs like Ramayan or soccer world cup. I saw men in my family making tea at mid night for 50 people during FIFA…
Then with the arrival of colour TV & 24 hour channels, the crowd slowly disappeared…
I saw the modus operandi of consuming information slowly started to change. It was those early days when discussion, books, sports & travel based information sharing mechanism slowly but surely started to move towards viewing information.
Again, it was fun initially.
But that time people started to become brand sluts. Which colour TV brand? Which VCR etc.
3. Third significant phase was the beginning of post economic liberalisation era. Like last two phases it felt superb initially. Saw our town changing fast…
But, also witnessed smaller neighbourhood gatherings, lesser involvement of people in their neighbour’s functions and occasions…
Calling decorators and tent houses started to become the new normal, which was previously done by neighbourhood youngsters under guidance of few pros
4. By Y2K, world almost changed. Individual families more empowered than ever before with more amenities and appliances than ever before…but, more confined within the neighbourhood.
That mohalla feeling was almost dead.
Definition of happiness started to change…from doing things (like winning a football, cricket, TT match or wooing a girl or winning a fight against rivals) to owning things. Gadgets and brands started to take center stage of defying happiness…
Then came the 5th stage.
In 2019, an once in a century pandemic (that too in an era of lonely individuals) changed everything, again!
It was a bloody reminder about the danger of the path that we have chosen as a species…
But, it also restored the old version of myself.
I know what I want in life. My boundaries. My joys.
These are all old fashioned concepts.
I know where it all going from here on… and I believe I know how to dodge those changes!
I know change is the only constant. But, I guess I figured out a few cheat codes ;)
Never stop valuing what you truly like. Never stop being what you truly are.
IMO, being contemporary at the cost of losing the version of you, that u kinda like most, doesn’t make sense.
Let the change come…flow with the change…but stay with the core…!
