On April 1st 2020, I decided I wanted to change my life.
Today I have 210,000+ followers and make $30,000 a month.
Give me 2 minutes and I'll show you exactly how I did it.
THREAD
This thread will cover everything you need to know about building a personal brand online, including:
1. How to Grow
2. How to Stand Out
3. How to Monetise
If you're struggling in any area, then keep reading.
I started this journey 2 years ago as a broke college student looking for an escape.
Since then I've tried and learned everything in and out of the book.
Now there are 3 things you're gonna need to make a living solely from Twitter.
- An audience
- A personality
- A high-income skill
Let's talk about all 3.
-- How To Grow --
Now it goes without saying, you need eyes on your stuff in order for people to take action on it.
But it's not as simple as paying for followers or doing follow 4 follow.
If you want to make money, you need a genuine audience.
Tip #1
Engage. A lot.
I used this tip as often as I could when I first started and it's honestly the reason why I'm here today.
Engaging means interacting with people on the timeline.
Leaving high-value comments, showing your opinions and connecting with the tweeter (haha funny word).
DON'T BE LIKE EVERYONE ELSE and leave comments that are basically saying what the original tweet says.
By leaving more comments and genuinely connecting with the tweeter, you open the doors for relationships in the DMs.
More on how to write better comments in the 'How to stand out' section.
Tip #2
DMs.
DMs are your best friend. It's how I've made 90% of my money.
But in terms of growth, it's gonna be the number 1 tool you can utilise.
I've developed thousands of friendships, connections and relationships by sending simple messages to people who I thought were interesting.
I messaged @thedankoe when I thought he looked like a white girl, and we've been friends ever since.
@thedankoe The only thing I'll tell you when it comes to the DMs is to be genuine.
Reach out because you want to build a connection with that person, not because I'm telling you to.
Thank them for their advice, congratulate them, or ask them for help.
@thedankoe On Twitter, connections are more important than followers.
Make every ounce of effort to get to know people.
Because strangers turn into friends, friends turn into business transactions and business transactions turn into money.
@thedankoe Tip #3
Write Threads.
Props to @OneJKMolina for this tip.
People love stories. If you can turn something you're trying to say into a story, it'll be much more meaningful and memorable than just saying it as is.
People remember stories. Not words.
@thedankoe @OneJKMolina The structure I like to follow goes:
Relate. Inspire. Give Hope.
If you follow that structure throughout your threads, you'll definitely develop an authentic relationship with your followers.
@thedankoe @OneJKMolina Some thread ideas:
1. How did you get to where you are now?
2. Lessons you've learned from doing x
3. Advice you'd give to people doing x
4. Inspiring come-up stories
5. How to guides on topics in your niche
6. Personal milestones or goals [and how you achieved them]
@thedankoe @OneJKMolina If you really want to grow that following, write a thread a day for 30 days and watch what happens to your growth.
@thedankoe @OneJKMolina -- How To Stand Out --
We've talked about how to grow, now let's talk about how to grow properly so you don't look like everyone else.
This is what will really develop that genuine audience and show your authenticity.
@thedankoe @OneJKMolina Tip #1
Going back to engaging, this is how I stood out and used comments to my advantage.
The one simple tip that I always tell people to follow but 99% don't.
Be yourself.
@thedankoe @OneJKMolina It's as simple as that because most people try to copy others and end up having the exact same personality as everyone else.
Now, this goes for writing tweets and communicating in the DMs as well as engaging.
@thedankoe @OneJKMolina You're building a PERSONAL brand, so why are you trying to mimic everyone else?
@thedankoe @OneJKMolina Now, I like to go about being myself in a few different ways.
1. Utilise your personality traits.
Being British, I'm naturally sarcastic, so you'll often see me being sarcastic asf in the comments.
Don't be worried about being different, because that's your advantage.
@thedankoe @OneJKMolina 2. Be funny.
I love making people laugh. So if I see someone post a tweet that I can post a funny reply to, I'm 100% posting a funny reply.
It's just what naturally comes to my mind.
And the best part is it's not forced (more on being genuine in the next tip).
@thedankoe @OneJKMolina Now obviously don't try and make a joke out of everything.
You need to understand when to be funny and when to be serious.
It comes with time.
It's all about what you genuinely want to reply with. That will dictate your following.
@thedankoe @OneJKMolina 3. Say how you genuinely feel.
A big problem today with personal brand building is everyone says what everyone else says.
There's no polarization or controversy.
Everyone just agrees to try and become friends with everyone else.
@thedankoe @OneJKMolina And whilst there's nothing wrong with trying to be friends with everyone, it's going to injure that authenticity of yours that we're trying to develop.
@thedankoe @OneJKMolina Most people don't understand how.
They either never say their opinion at all or they go on a rampage and start tearing everyone apart with their thoughts.
@thedankoe @OneJKMolina Don't do either. There's a way of building genuine connections whilst still speaking your mind.
Just be nice.
"See bro I don't think that, I believe that..."
So much nicer than going "WRONG DICKHEAD I DISAGREE".
@thedankoe @OneJKMolina Now by saying how you genuinely feel about topics, you build that genuine connection with people who feel the exact same way.
Which is exactly what you want when you're building a personal brand.
@thedankoe @OneJKMolina Tip #2
There's a recurring word throughout this thread.
'Genuine'.
Be as genuine as you possibly can.
Building a proper following is all about getting authentic followers.
If you want those authentic relationships, you need to be authentic yourself.
@thedankoe @OneJKMolina It's not so much people aren't authentic today. It's just they're trying so hard to be someone they're not, that the authenticity is never there in the first place.
@thedankoe @OneJKMolina This tip is going to be quite short as there isn't much to say.
Be you. Be genuine. Be authentic.
Make sure every comment you leave, every DM you send, and every tweet you write comes from a genuine place inside you.
Otherwise don't say it.
@thedankoe @OneJKMolina Trust me, people respect authenticity. People give trust to those who are real.
And trust equals money.
You're building a personal brand, so don't try to be like everyone else.
@thedankoe @OneJKMolina You don't want to be the next me, or the next Zuby or the next Elon.
You want to be the first you.
@thedankoe @OneJKMolina -- How to Monetise --
Here comes the easy part.
Building the following up is very hard.
Making money from it is easy (if you followed my steps so far).
@thedankoe @OneJKMolina How is it easy? Because you've already built up that genuine following who trust you.
That's how it's easy.
Trust brings money. Trust me.
@thedankoe @OneJKMolina All you need to do is help people by offering services.
Make them money. Give them results.
As simple as that.
@thedankoe @OneJKMolina A ton of people make the same mistakes that I made.
They start with a lead magnet, then they make a course, then they release another course, then a cohort, and then finally a high ticket service.
@thedankoe @OneJKMolina Forget that. Start backward (another tip from @onejkmolina).
Pick something you're really good at.
If you're good at writing, do ghostwriting.
If you're good at designing, do web design.
If you're good at speaking, do sales closing.
Then sell it as a service.
@thedankoe @OneJKMolina Millions of people need websites, work written for them, and sales closed for them.
So you step in and provide that help.
Also known as high-income skills.
@thedankoe @OneJKMolina The good news is, these people are also all over Twitter.
You just need to find them and pitch them your services.
But it's not as simple as messaging someone 'Hey man. You need a website?'.
You gotta build your offer up first.
@thedankoe @OneJKMolina Now by no means am I an offer expert. I would consult with @realryanbooth.
But in the simplest of terms, you wouldn't say "I'll make a website for you". You'd say "I can get you more leads in the coaching niche if I make you a website".
Specifics.
@thedankoe @OneJKMolina @realryanbooth Once you've nailed that offer, it's time to outreach to people.
DMs are your friend.
Find people who need your service, connect with them in the DMs and then get them on a call to discuss.
@thedankoe @OneJKMolina @realryanbooth Then it's as simple as listening to what the client wants and then providing that better than anyone else could.
Get a testimonial from them and rinse and repeat.
The more reviews and credibility you build up, the more people will want you to work for them.
@thedankoe @OneJKMolina @realryanbooth If you're struggling with getting your first client, work for free.
Provide your service for free in exchange for a testimonial and then use that testimonial to get a paying client.
@thedankoe @OneJKMolina @realryanbooth "Hey man, I recently got X 10 times more leads than they were getting with a website that I made specifically tailored to them. Would love to hop on a call this week and discuss how I can get you the same results"
Boom.
@thedankoe @OneJKMolina @realryanbooth Then you can release more content.
Ebooks, courses, cohorts, and lead magnets.
You've already proved you can perform your skill well. So now you can teach people.
You've built up trust and credibility in your niche, so people will easily buy from you.
@thedankoe @OneJKMolina @realryanbooth And that's pretty much how you can monetise your personal brand by starting backwards.
Skill first. Then teach people.
How are people going to buy something from you that teaches them your skill if they've never seen you put your skill into action?
@thedankoe @OneJKMolina @realryanbooth And that my friends is what I did to build my personal brand from the bottom and make $30k a month from it.
The key takeaway is to be genuine.
Authenticity is the best currency online. People buy from what they trust.
@thedankoe @OneJKMolina @realryanbooth If you are struggling with growing your following and would like me to help, I'm currently taking on a few clients this month.
I'll take you to 10k followers and develop genuine connections with others for you.
Dm me if you're interested (really not cheap).
@thedankoe @OneJKMolina @realryanbooth This thread took a long ass time to make so I'd highly appreciate it if you RT (if you found it valuable) and hit the follow button.
