Denmark v France game was a good tactical contest between two coaches. Denmark started the game with a front line of 3 to press high. The pressure was not very aggressive as WBs couldn’t jump for high press.
The first possession regain through the high press came at 26th minute. Although it couldn’t end up with a dangerous situation, France started playing long balls at goal kicks for the remainder of the half.
Giroud was the target of these long balls. Tchouameni was helping in aerial duels as well. French players could get all the rebounds, and through quick switch plays progressed with advantages coming with Mbappe-Theo duo.
In 2nd half, maybe to invite France for short build-ups, maybe believing that the high press not being very effective, Denmark returned to a fully zonal 523 mid block. If France could break the compact 23 through the middle, a wide CB jumped on the receiver.
If France played wider areas, the closer player of the 1st line approached the receiver. As France pushed Denmark press to the lower block through continuity supports, Denmark press turned into a 541 at low block.
This approach stopped France’s progression for quite a while. However, there were a few SPs/crosses where Danish players lost aerial duels. For this reason, Hjulmand subbed in Norgaard and switched to 5122 mid block, a much narrower structure leaving wider spaces completely open.
Griezmann immediately recognized this and pointed to his teammates during the first attempt to progress against this structure and a progression through the wide right channel brought the winning goal.
Deschamps won against Hjulmand this time. He proved France is stronger than ever.
“Invincibility lies in the defense; the possibility of victory in the attack.” France has high quality at both ends of the game and can use it in various ways with high efficiency and efficacy.
