Josh would likely be better off anywhere *but* San Francisco.
Good chance he overdoses and dies here in the next few years.
But we view ourselves as “compassionate” by practicing “harm reduction.”
I think that the current approach by San Francisco government is ethically similar to assisted suicide.
Except these young souls are in no way needing an end to their lives.
They need to go to treatment, and then get jobs and reenter society.
Instead, we do the opposite. We enable the addictions.
We provide needles, cash and hotel rooms. We decriminalize dealing, public use, street camping and theft.
We look the other way when we see people passed out on the sidewalk.
What is this nihilistic culture that San Francisco so passionately embraces?
Do we not see how our society has become ill?
Do we not feel desire to heal those who are sick?
No sense of responsibility for lost souls arriving on our shores?
I think that the current approach of San Francisco government is morally bankrupt.
It views human lives as disposable.
It sees people as helpless victims who have no chance for a better future.
It keeps them comfortable on their path towards early death.
Imagine a wealthy mother in Pacific Heights with a young adult son addicted to meth.
What would she do...? Would she hand him $600/month, a costco-sized bag of needles, a hotel room, and say "good luck"?
No. She would send him to rehab.
I doubt you could find a parent of means anywhere in the world who would handle their drug-addicted child the way SF government is approaching our addicted population.
So why is SF gov so entrenched in its beliefs? When the overdoses soar, why do they dig their heels in?
Josh doesn't want to go home because "it's just more boring in Idaho."
More boring...? What is he doing in SF that makes it not boring? Is he visiting our museums, restaurants and bars? Making friends? Getting a job?
No - he's addicted to meth. And he has a community around it.
San Francisco is willingly allowing and inherently cultivating this "non-boring" environment for people like Josh.
Josh is not a child. He's an adult who should be in school or professional training. If he has mental disorders he needs treatment. What he doesn't need is SF gov.
I truly believe that San Francisco government will be culpable for his early death.
The mothers of young boys like Josh should band together and file a class action lawsuit against our city.
What we are doing is borderline evil.
