1/ A Zambian student was recruited from a Russian prison to serve in the Wagner mercenary group and died "a hero" after storming Ukrainian trenches, according to Wagner head Yevgeny Prigozhin. ⬇️
2/ The death of Lemekhani Nathan Nyirenda was announced earlier this month but the circumstances were unclear, leading to expressions of concern from the Government of Zambia. Prigozhin has now provided more details about Nyirenda's recruitment and death.
3/ In response to a question from a Russian media outlet, Prighozin has given an account (the accuracy of which can't be verified) on the Telegram channel of his Concord Group:
4/ "Yes, I remember this guy well. I talked to him in Tver Region and asked him a question: "Why do you need this war? You'll be able to get out early in a couple of years, you'll be home soon and you'll see your relatives. Why are you going?
5/ After all, the chance of dying is high enough. Remember that." And he answered what I expected. He said: "You Russians have helped us Africans to gain our independence for many years. When it was difficult for us, you gave us a hand, and you continue to do so now.
6/ The Wagner PMC saves thousands of Africans and if I go with you to war, it is probably the least I can do to pay our debts. And if I stay alive, I will learn to fight for my homeland.
7/ And one more thing, I'm honoured, I only know about Wagner by hearsay, but I can become one of you."
