The temple is one of the earliest known sun temples much older than Konark - Modhera.
According to Kalhana, the Martand Sun Temple was built by king Lalitaditya Muktapida in the 8th century AD, considered to be a mirror of the art & skill of Kashmiri Hindu Architecture.
