POSITION OF ISLAMIC SCHOLARS REGARDING Al-GHAZALIS BOOK IHYA
Previously, I wrote a thread on Ibn 'Arabi:
With the newest burnings of Ihya, we have a new controversial topic.
Imam Ghazali was an expert on Shafi fiqh and logic...
He wrote the book Ihya discussing the spiritual significance behind Islamic practices
'Ulama renounced weak & fabricated ahadith in the book (Ghazali admits his ignorance in Hadith) and the philosophical and ghaybi claims he derived from it
His contemporary At-Tartushi says:
Hence, the Hadith expert Ibn Jawzi wrote this book as a purified version of the book Ihya (removing the false stuff but leaving the beneficial spiritual things)
If somebody wants to benefit from Al-Ghazali, he can take this summary
Burning Ihya has no benefit, especially...
...not labeling Al-Ghazali an innovator.
Imam adh-Dhahabi affirms in his biography of al-Ghazali that he repented from his mistakes and also started studying Hadith-Science in depth.
He died with Sahih al-Bukhari on his chest.
The burnings will only create more division...
...and hatred between people. Nothing will come out of it
Some scholars and rulers in the past did recommend burning Ihya, that is not disputed
But as Ibn 'Uthaymeen emphasizes, only legitimate Islamic rulers and authorities can issue such bans on books
Everyone should be
...calm, since such an ignorant act as done by this ultra salafi was expected, since that account is always takfeering and bashing 'Ulama, especially Asha'ira
Stop giving him attention
Guard your tongues when it comes to any person, especially 'Ulama
Wassalamu alaikum
