National Commissioner and Chairperson Legal Services, Clearance and Complaint Committee (LSC&CC) Barr. (Mrs) May Agbamuche-Mbu speaking on her experiences on the conduct of elections at the ongoing Induction Retreat for Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) in Lagos State.
2. The conduct of free, fair & credible elections is a core mandate of the Commission.
3. To fulfil this mandate, the Commission has the duty to prepare adequately for the conduct of an election and to do that, it becomes necessary to learn from previous elections and plan properly to avoid mistakes made in the past.
4. Planning is critical in ensuring maximum coordination, efficiency and effectiveness in the preparations for the conduct of the 2023 General Election. The following areas should therefore be considered:
5. The RECs are expected to monitor the happenings on the field carefully during Election day and should be confident, courageous and fearless in the discharge of their duties and must promptly report any infractions and problems on the field.
5. Ad-hoc staff recruitment should be closely monitored by the RECs and the letters of Appointment issued to Ad-hoc staff should always indicate the amount payable to them.
Similarly, Account numbers should be collated at the point of signing of these appointment letters.
