I grew my service business from $0 to $100k/month in 14 months with a remote team of 8 people
Knowing what I know now, I could've done it in less than 6 months
If I had to start again, the following are the principles I'd follow
Thread
Here's what you'll learn in this thread:
1. Choosing a business model
2. Getting your first 1-2 clients
3. How to close 6-7 figure deals without even pitching
4. How to grow without sending 100s of cold emails every day
5. When & how to think about automating & delegating
1. To make 100,000 fast
You have two levers:
a. Market: Choose a market that is rich or has potential to be rich but they have a burning problem that you can solve
I'll talk more about this in a minute but the most important thing for your target audience is:
AN BIG PROBLEM
b. Pricing & Offer
You can either sell a $100 product to 1000 people
Or a $1000 product to 100 people
Or a $10,000 offer to 10 people
"But Donvesh, I have zero experience, how can I sell anything for $10k?"
First, everyone starts with 0 testimonials & experience so stop using that as an excuse
Second, you don't have to charge $10k upfront
Start with $1000
Deliver on your promise, and then solve the next problem for them
Sell to someone who has worked with you is 100x easier
2. To get your first 1-2 clients
You can't charge companies that are doing well, especially when you're just starting
And you shouldn't work for free also
Instead, go & make a performance-based deal with a company/brand that's struggling
They have nothing to lose so they will give you a chance
Now, it might be harder to save that sinking ship, but that case study is worth much more
3. On sales calls
Assume the close
And then make the client (not the prospect) visualize the experience and results of working with you
And sneak in social proof regularly
No sales tactics and persuasion secrets needed
Keep it simple
4. Over 85% of our current clients have come from either:
a. Referrals
b. Inbound
To get started, you can use cold emails
But if you continuously need to do outreach and you're not getting inbound/referrals, you're doing something wrong
The right way to build a service business
Is to work with 5-10 clients
And have a performance-based deal with them
This way, you'll be incentivized to grow their business and in turn, grow yours instead of getting more clients & then losing them in 2 months
5. For delegation
Too many gurus preach working on the business and not in the business
But there's nuance
If you're doing less than $30k/month
You HAVE to do everything yourself
$30-$50k, start hiring & training people
$50k+ Start delegating slowly
For SOPs, zaps, workflows etc:
Don't worry about saving your time right now
You're basically broke
So do things manually and focus on money-making activities instead of complex zapier automation & internal systems & SOPs
6. Don't try to limit yourself & productize your offer
If you do that, you'll be like an underpaid worker in a Chinese factory
If you want to make the most money with the least work
Do custom work
Do anything that's required to fulfill your offer
Be a high-end tailor
