The ring of Michael Attaleiates (c.1022-1080). Michael was a famous lawyer & historian during the tumultuous 11th century. His work โThe History,โ is an invaluable text in understanding this chaotic period of Byzantine history.
The exquisite ring is held ar the collection at Dumbarton Oaks & has an inscription of the Theotokos & the prayer โBearer of God, help thy servant Michael Attaleiates!โ Fascinating to think it may have been on his hand when he penned his famous work!
What a waste that it is now collecting dust, infrequently brought out to be viewed by a few curious enthusiasts, and then back to some anonymous drawer in storage. This ring is the symbol of one of Byzantiumโs greatest scholars & deserves to be worn by a worthy successor!
