Maybe this is why the "Americans have no culture!!" stuff seems so constant compared to in Europe. The US is simply so big - sporting so many different regional cultures - that the deracinating effect of what you describe is much greater.
Like I don't think there's any comparison between moving from rural Wyoming to Harvard and then New York and leaving EnkΓΆping or Degerfors to go to Stockholm or Uppsala. None. The "culture shock" faced by Americans seems much, much greater than here.
