The illustration was published on a fake issue of the Soviet ‘Red Star’ newspaper created in 1983 by Italian journalist Vincenzo Sparagna and Soviet dissident Savik Shuster (pictured here in Afghanistan in 1983).
The paper was printed in Italy by Sparagna’s magazine Frigidaire, with 7,000 copies taken to Afghanistan by Sparagna and Shuster personally. The newspaper was then distributed in Afghanistan by mujahideen groups. Pictures apparently show Soviet POWs with the paper.
