And this was the first time in months... I'd be going to church.
What happened next changed my life... In the unlikeliest of ways.

Now I was working in a gym on Lagos Island (oriental hotels) yet I lived on the mainland.
My job was customer care rep.
I was paid N40k/mo ($100 then)
And I was spending N30k on transport

After a whole months work…I would have just about N10k
Don’t ask me how I fed or if I saved…
That was a luxury.
I lived with my parents so feeding was covered.
I was brought in as a Corper…so when my Nysc ended?
The extra financial allowance also did.

This was how life was until April 1st 2020 when the government announced there would be a lockdown due to the pandemic.
If that wasn’t bad enough…
The gyms couldn’t open so my work ended.
And I thought it was bad enough till July 5th…that fateful sunday.

About 10 years ago…my pastor asked us the teenagers to go help him sell his newspapers.
I don’t remember having a more worse day than that day.
The sun wasn’t hot…it was scorching.
And I couldn’t even sell 1 newspaper…
So I wondered…

I swore that day…that sales and marketing wasn’t for me.
I’d do any other job…except sales or marketing.
Even if it was a customer care rep in a gym where I was earning less than peanuts.

Because it’s 6:45am…it’s still quite dark.
I’m sitting right in the middle of the bus…then.
For some reason unknown to me…I make a decision that would forever change my life…

And made an even more foolish decision.
I bring out my iPhone 7…which was a gift…it cost 100k.

I bring out my phone to check my favorite platform…twit…

That was the next thing that happened.

Someone from outside the bus had grabbed my phone and peeled the slim dark iPhone 7 from my fingers…
I watched in dismay as the phone disappeared into the darkness.
In that split moment I contemplated…
Should I pursue them and risk my life?
Or should I stare…

This was the third time in 2 years I was losing my phone.
First time it was snatched on the road as I was walking…
Second time someone broke into the house and stole like 3 of our phones.
But this third one?
It was different…

“Why did I sit there??”

Feeling so much anger and pity…
I then asked myself the question that changed my trajectory…

I thought hard about this…and that’s when one thing dawned on me…
Two things to be precise.
1. I was broke…
Not because I didn’t have money…
But I lacked money making ideas.
But more importantly…

2. I realized that wealthy people have two things that make them stand out.
- A skill/service they exchanged for money.
- A network they built as their skill made them more valuable.
It was at that point…

I was going to become very valuable.
Now I didn’t still have my answer…
I still didn’t know what to do to make money…
Not a skill I could hope to master…
But there’s a saying
“When the student is ready…the teacher will appear”
So whether it was providence or…

My friend @ahnne_oge hits me up and tells me about a business…
“All you have to do is recommend other people’s products…and when someone buys you get a commission”
She explained.
I asked
“How much have YOUUUU Oge made…I’m tired of Ponzi schemes please”

“Okay I understand but how much…” I quizzed her further…
“Well as at now…I’ve made N120k”
I nearly fell off my seat.
My eyes opened.
My mouth dropped.
“Ogë you mean YOUUU have made 120k?”

N120k (~$100) isn’t a lot of money
But at that time that was my 1 year’s salary.
If I did that…I’d be able to buy back my iPhone 7.
Slowly coming back from my shock I replied…

That was all I needed to hear…

It was an affiliate marketing program.
I struggled internally for dayssss.
Until finally…
“I don’t like marketingggg” was my excuse

And honestly my goal was to critic the course…
I had no faith or belief money could be made online…
“This is some Ponzi scheme…I’ll use them and create content” I told myself
But still I took the course and wrote this down.

You see a few years back…when I was in university…a friend had walked up to me…
And in between our conversations he sent me a couple of PDFs.
I didn’t read 99% of them.
But I read one.

It was in that book I began to understand the principles of persuasion and influence…
So when I was taking this affiliate marketing course…
I had a light bulb moment.
“Wait a minute…I know what these guys are doing!”
It wasn’t marketing…it was influence and persuasion!

Now if you go back up…
You’d see that my goal was to make N200k per month. And 1M by year end.
This was me…thinking as big as I could possibly think.
200k was beyond my imagination…but guess what happened?

This customer care rep…who could barely afford to save N10k…had made N1M online…
And the best part?

But what other people were struggling with…was so clear to me like night and day.
Maybe because I hated sales and marketing so I understood what it was like not to know it…
I started teaching other people.

Which again is an element of persuasion.
This made it easier for me to sell more and more.
And I did this business for a year.
But this time it was not unlikely to hear my students were doing 7-figure affiliate commissions
