Less than 10% of people can solve this puzzle.
There's a (common) fatal error.
It might also be the reason that you're stuck in life:
The Nine Dots Test
Instructions:
Without lifting your pencil (or finger) from the page, connect all nine dots with 4 straight lines.
Simple right?
Did you get it?
Where most people fail, is the assumption that there is a boundary around the dots.
One that we are not allowed to break.
An "assumed constraint".
However, in order to pass the test.
This assumed constraint must be broken.
(keep scrolling for an eye-opening story)
The Chained Elephant:
A full-grown African elephant weighs 13,000 lbs.
Yet it is held in place by a chain connected to a single stake in the ground.
β€” Why doesn't it break free?
As a baby β€” the elephant is fixed with that very same chain.
It pulls and pulls, until its leg is raw and bleeding.
Slowly, it's conditioned to believe escape is impossible β€” and only leads to pain.
It grows up and never tries again.
The "assumed constraint" stops it.
The chained elephant resembles many people’s stories:
- Assuming they are constrained to their 9-5 job
- Assuming that it's too late to start something new
- Assuming they are not capable of accomplishing something great
They go through life, never tapping into the true potential they possess.
Never pushing through their constraints.
Stuck in the box.
Here's a step-by-step plan to challenge (and break) assumed constraints:
1. Identify the assumptions that are limiting you
This will require some self-reflection.
As well as an examination of the beliefs and attitudes that influence your thinking and behavior.
2. Challenge these assumptions
Ask yourself whether your assumptions are based on evidence.
Or whether they are simply beliefs you have accepted without question.
3. Explore alternative perspectives
Seek out new information related to your assumptions β€” consider new ways of thinking.
Ask those close to you for their opinions and advice.
4. Take actions that support your new perspective
- Set new goals
- Make new plans
- Change your habits and behaviors
Work to align your actions with your new perspective.
How to challenge (and break) your assumed constraints:
1. Identify the assumptions that are limiting you
2. Challenge these assumptions
3. Explore alternative perspectives
4. Take actions that support your new perspective
That's a wrap!
