In ancient time Vadnagar important pilgrimage of Buddhism with many Chatya & Vihar. In 640 AD Chinese Buddhist traveller Hieu-en-Tsiang visited Anandpur?Vadnagar. He wrote details of this ancient city in his travelogue.
In ancient time Patan & Anandpur (Vadnagar) were Gujarat's centre of knowledge. Many Veda scholar Brahmins lived here.Gujarat kings encouraged them. In 949 AD Malwa Parmar dynasty king Siyak 2nd donated 2 villages of Mohadvasak (Modasa) to 2 Nagar Brahmins of Anandpur (Vadnagar).
In 10th century during rule of Gujarat king Mulraj Solanki, Vachchhacharya & Dirghacharya were famous scholar Brahmins of Vadnagar.11 century poet Shripal was a great author in Gujarat king Siddharaj Jaysinh Solanki court.He wrote many books including 'Vadnagar Prakar Prashasti'.
In ancient time there lived many Brahmins/Nagars at Vadnagar. They were scholars & famous for their knowledge of Veda, Purana & Upnashida.11th century Pandit Uvvat of Vadnagar was a great scholar of Veda. He wrote 'Shukla Yajurvedbhashya' & many books on Veda.
In ancient time Vadnagar was centre of Shaivism. According to Skanda Purana, Vadnagar was in Hatkesh Kshetra pilgrimage. It was capital of Anart Desh (north Gujarat). There were 3000 temples in Vadnagar in ancient time.
11th century Pandit Vishnu of Anandnagar (Vadnagar) was a Sanskrit scholar. He wrote Sanskrit book 'Shankhyayan Padhdhati'.In 1054 AD Pandit Dhya Dwivedi who was a great Sanskrit erudite of Vadnagar wrote Sanskrit book 'Nitimanjari'.
The Jain religious book 'Kalpasutra' was not read in public or before followers until 526 AD. It was read among Jain monks only prior to 526 AD. In 526 AD 'Kalpasutra' was read first time in public at Vadnagar to console Gujarat Maitrak king Dhruvsen on death of his only son.
In 1152 AD Gujarat king Kumarpal Solanki built Vadnagar fort. Outside of fort,he erected two Toran (arch gate) & built a large temple between them. As per 'Vadnagarprashasti' written by poet Sripal, king Kumarpal beheaded Malwa king Ballal & hanged his head on Vadnagar fort gate.
Valabhi was Gujarat capital in Maitrak rule during 6th to 8th century. Many Nagar families shifted from Vadnagar to Valabhi for livelihood. In 788 Valabhi was destroyed by Arab invaders & Maitrak rule ended. So some Vadnagara Nagar families shifted to Vala Rajput state of Talaja.
15 century great Gujarati poet Narsinh Mehta was a Vadnagara Nagar.His ancestors came to Valabhi in Saurashtra from Vadnagar during Maitrak rule & then shifted to Talaja to Junagadh.Narsinh Mehta's son Shamaldas married Kamalalakshmi/Juthibai daughter of Madan Mehta of Vadnagar.
In 1520 AD Mewad Chitod ruler Rana Sanga attacked north Gujarat & won Idar from Gujarat Sultan Muzffar 2nd. Then he won Ahmednagar (now Himatnagar) & attacked Gujarat Sultnat town Vadnagar which was populated mostly by traders, Brahmins & Nagar....1/2
In 1520 AD Brahmin & Nagar of Vadnagar offered money to Mewad Chitod Rana Sanga with a request not to loot Brahmins' town Vadnagar. Rana Sanga agreed. Vadnagar's Brahmin & Nagar paid tribute money to Mewad Chitod ruler Maharana Sangramsinh/Sanga. So he not looted Vadnagar...2/2
In the 16th century, Surat Nazim (governor) Malik Gopi who was only Hindu Amir of Gujarat Sultnat founded Gopipura & built Gopi Talav in Surat. He was Nagar Brahmin of Vadnagar & came to Surat in late 15 century.His ancestors were rich. His father & mother were Kikraj & Randevi.
In middle age, Vadnagar was under the rule of Delhi Sultnat, Gujarat independent Sultnat, Delhi Mughal Sultnat & Maratha. During these rulers, Vadnagar important decreased & it became a small town. It was in Kadi Prant (province) of Gaekwad's Baroda State during British rule.
142 years old photo of 12th century Toran (arch gate) at Vadnagar in Gujarat was taken by Archaeological Survey of India in 1880 AD. It was built by Gujarat king Kumarpal Solanki as temple compound gate in 1152 AD.
