7 reasons your next job should be remote first.
Many companies claim to be “remote friendly” but don’t really believe it’s a better way to work. They favor in-person employees, create an uneven playing field, and you end up feeling left out.
A remote first company is different:
1. Asynchronous communication
You don’t have to:
• Be in the same room at the same time
• Come up with responses on the spot
• Interrupt your day with meetings
You can:
• Think deeply
• Reply thoughtfully
• Invite others to participate
Conversation quality is higher.
2. Flexible schedule by design
Asynchronous communication means you’re not chained to a chair.
Get the work done when you have time and when you focus best.
It’s not about hours in office, it’s about results.
Go for a walk. Play with your kids. Happier people do better work.
3. Strong writing habits are encouraged
Good writers excel on remote first teams.
Because asynchronous communication is a part of the culture, you’ll end up developing your writing abilities.
Learning to think and communicate better is a skill that will serve you for life.
4. Level playing field
Unlike with “remote forced” companies, everyone has equal access to information and influence.
Everyone has the opportunity for their voice to be heard. No one is disadvantaged because of their timezone.
Catch up and chime in on your time.
5. Location independent
No commute means you can spend the hours you save on the things (or people) you care about.
Also, because there are no in-office requirements, you can work from anywhere.
Everyone shares the same location: remote.
You’re not the odd one out.
6. Tools made for you
At “remote forced” companies, communication tools feel like they were added as an afterthought (because they were).
At remote FIRST companies, everything is designed with remote communication in mind. No more swimming upstream or fighting for influence.
7. Fewer surprises
Team members work and solve problems in public.
Everyone sees and shares first drafts for early feedback. No one’s isolated because communication happens in an open forum.
The result is more collaboration and fewer silos.
Not all “remote” jobs are created equal.
Next time you’re interviewing for a role, ask if the company is remote first.
