Luis Enrique stint with the national team has been largely positive, IMO. The biggest issue, for me, is the fact that Spain are highly limited in key areas. No real difference makers up front, and an out of sorts, make-shift backline.
The three midfielders and the GK aside, how many members of Spain’s XI are starters, domestically? Rodri played out of position, Olmo and Fati are returning from serious injuries, Alba, Laporte, Asensio and Ferran mostly see the bench and Morata certainly isn’t indispensable.
Luis Enrique picked this squad, sure. But given the requisites of the system, would guys like Aspas, Canalas, Ramos, Merino and (*maybe*) Deulofeu be the difference between losing to Morocco and going all the way? As much as I rate them, I doubt it.
Ultimately, I’d love to see Lucho back in club football, in a set-up wherein he’d have the resources to mould his squad. Distinct systems call for distinct personnel.
