Today marks the #InternationalHumanRightsDay and the 75th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
#Guantanamo remains the global symbol of injustice and violation of all 'Human Rights'
Asim Thabit Al Khalaqi, was held in Guantanamo for 12 years with no charges or trial. He was released and relocated to Kazakhistan, a country completely foreign to him, with no family or friends
He had long suffered from acute medical problems and despite being promised healthcare, he was instead neglected.
He was left for 3 months appealing for medical attention while he crawled on his arms around his flat to serve his needs.
Eventually he succumbed to his condition and passed away.
Adel, a former Guantanamo prisoner, believes the government knew this would happen and wanted to get rid of him.
"I know Asim died of extreme medical negligence at best, and was intentionally killed at worst." - Adel said.
After he passed, the government refused to send his body 'home' to his relatives, and instead hastily buried him in an unknown graveyard.
On the #InternationalHumanRightsDay we remember the 100s of prisoners tortured, abused and held without charge or trial in Guantanamo Bay and other sites.
There must be accountability for the crimes committed against these men, and for that we will continue to campaign.
