Charge more for your UX/UI design work - here's how👇 (thread)
1) Intro
After working on over 100+ projects, I developed a pricing method that allows me to have an effective hourly rate of $150 and above.
And I'm happy to share it with you all.
2) A 5-page website case
Let's say we're a beginner designer and have a 5-page website to redesign and develop (using no-code tools).
We could charge $1500 at $300 per page but we don't want to throw random numbers around.
We need to estimate the price as close as possible.
3) Estimating the design phase
Speaking from experience, I’d roughly estimate that UX research and design of a 5-page website would take me around 30 hours.
That's my first step - 30 hours.
4) Estimating the development
If you're signing up for development of the website you need to charge extra for that.
Personally, I'd estimate that a 5-page website build would take me around 25 hours to complete.
5) Design + development total = 55hrs
After the initial rough estimation, we concluded that 5-page website research, design, and development would take us around 55 hours.
Now, we're not multiplying that by the hourly rate. Not yet.
6) Your safety net (30%)
We need some extra budget if we need to spend more time researching a technical solution or hiring extra help.
Hiccups happen often, and we need to be prepared for that.
Add 30% on top of the estimate.
55 * 1,3 = 71
7) Hourly rate x Time estimate
So, we're at 71 hours total.
Let's multiply that by our most recent hourly rate.
For me, as a beginner, that was $25. Your rate might be lower or higher. Use one that you feel most comfortable with.
8) Your net rate
Multiply 71 * 30 = $1775
I always round the number up or down to the nearest full number so that would be $1800.
And that's our estimated budget.
But, we don't want to stop there yet.
We've got taxes to pay.
9) Cover the taxes
I also add an additional 30% on top of the estimate to cover my taxes.
Let's calculate that.
1800 * 1.3 = $2340
Rounded down to $2300
10) Re-evaluate your project rates
If you're based in a low PPP country your rates might go down depending on the client budgets you're working with.
Either way, we re-evaluated our price from $1500 to a much more realistic $2300.
11) Not feeling comfortable asking for higher prices?
Charging less was one of the reasons I struggled with keeping a steady cash flow, and my agency stagnated for over a year until I got through that limiting belief.
You have to step it up. The sooner the better.
That's it Guys, hope it helps!
