I went from 0 to 34,000+ followers on Twitter and Instagram.
The secret?
I studied copywriting.
Here’s how you can grow your audience with copywriting:
DISCLAIMER: This is NOT the only way to study copywriting.
This is simply MY way of doing it.
Is it the most effective? Maybe.
But I can only speak from my experience.
Cool? Let’s begin…
First, start with the fundamentals.
Read up on the greats.
Start with these:
• Cashvertising
• The Boron Letters
• The Ultimate Sales Letter
And don’t worry, you can usually find these for free online.
Done? Then by now, you’ll know you need to do this one exercise.
This one exercise drastically improved my writing…
What is it?
It’s called Copywork.
Copywork is simply hand-copying great writing.
Yep, that’s it!
It sounds woo-woo, but it’s the fastest way to help you notice:
• Patterns
• Structures
• And themes
Here are a few things I’d Copywork…
Got it? Sweet. Now it’s time to build your copy swipe file.
What’s that, you say? You don’t know what a swipe file is?
Well, a swipe file is simply a collection of things that inspire you.
Things you could put in it:
• Pics
• Books
• Phrases
“But Jay, how do I find stuff to fill my swipe file with?”
Don’t worry, my friend… I gotchu.
Subscribe to these email lists:
• Tej Dosa
• Kieran Drew
• Eddie Shleyner
(Of course, there are others… but these are my personal favs)
The secret tho?
Don’t just read to read.
Notice what grabs your attention.
Then ask yourself, “Why did that grab my attention?”
Then work backward and deconstruct how they got your attention.
Kapish?
Okay… so far we’ve covered:
• Books to read
• Things to Copywork
• Email lists to subscribe to
Hmm, what’s next?
Oh! I know… Start writing!!! (duh)
Here’s how I’d start:
First, start on Twitter.
Why? Because Twitter has a 280-character limit.
This forces you to write:
• Short
• Sweet
• And snappy
*Wait… I can’t believe I forgot to mention this*
There are 2 parts to writing:
1) The thinking behind the writing
2) The actual writing
And can you guess which is most important?
That’s right, the 1st part.
Why?
Because writing is just thinking on paper.
And the best way to improve your thinking?
Study from different niches.

“Sure, Jay. So I’ve done all this researching, studying, and writing… But how do I actually grow?”
Patience, my little grasshopper.
You see, it’s not about getting followers.
It’s about building the skills that gain followers.
Do you understand?
Do this for 6 months and document your copywriting journey.
• What new insight did you gain?
• What’s working for you?
• What’s not?
Write tweets and threads to you, 6 months ago.
And as you build skill and grow your audience…
You’ll position yourself for great things (no matter which way you pivot).
Alrighty, it’s getting past my bedtime.
I’ll wrap it up here. if you have any questions, just DM me.
Cheers!
- Jay
