The US banned Hawaiian language, poisons our water, devastated our universal healthcare, overthrew our country, & illegally occupies Hawaii to this day. My mother's hands were broken for speaking Hawaiian in school. The US is not a beacon, but the destroyer of democracy.
Since the US banned our Hawaiian language & culture, it nearly went extinct. Less than 100 kids spoke it in the 80's. Kids are STILL punished for speaking Hawaiian today. The teacher, administrators who did this cultural genocidal act have suffered no consequences.
Hawaii also leads the US in the school-to-prison pipeline - #1 in rounding up children, especially Native Hawaiians. Part of the continued US attempt to destroy us indigenous people and lifeways. This is ongoing genocide.
In the 1890s, over 95% of we Kanaka Maoli (Hawaiians) signed petitions against the annexation of the sovereign, internationally recognized country of Hawaii by the US. The US military responded by forcing us to be come a colony. The opposite of 'democracy'.
The US was AGAIN anti-democratic with Hawaiians in 1959. The UN requires a fair referendum regarding independence or statehood, but the US only included options for territory status or statehood, flouting international law. The US also rigged the vote with sham military votes
