1. New Zealand has passed the world’s first tobacco law that bans smoking for the next generation.
Under the new legislation, those aged 14 and under will not be able to buy cigarettes.
2. The law is set to come into effect in 2023 as NZ targets to be “smoke-free” by 2025.
“Thousands of people will live longer and healthier lives. The health system will be $5bn better off from not needing to cancers, heart attacks, strokes and amputations.”
3. The law is complemented by other measures that make smoking less affordable and accessible.
This includes reducing the legal amount of nicotine in tobacco products and forcing them to be sold only in certain stores.
4. However, the legislation will not restrict vape sales.
According to the country's Health Ministry, 8.3% of adults are now vaping daily, up from 6.2% in the previous year.
