In the story of Othello, Shakespeare showcased something that was never before seen–
A bona fide Mindfuck.
It is not merely simple manipulation or bullshitting, no–but a mental violation that leads to Othello murdering his own wife, Desdemona.

It is not merely simple manipulation or bullshitting, no–but a mental violation that leads to Othello murdering his own wife, Desdemona.
In the play, Iago, the mindfucker, orchestrated the murder by persuading Othello that Desdemona is cheating on him with his lieutenant, Cassio.
How?
How?
1. Reputation & Relationship
There’s no manipulation, let alone mindfucking, without developing trust.
This can be the trust of the victim directly, but also other trusted individuals around the victim. In the case of Othello, it’s the former.

The closer you are to the victim, the higher likelihood of success, but also renders a higher risk.
That’s why you need a good reputation and relationship to boot.

Iago is known as a direct and honest soldier, who Othello considers enough of to listen to him.
One has to give a concrete reason as to why the victim would listen to you—and being seen as honest with a solidified reputation is the best bet in doing so.

2. Identifying Vulnerabilities and Choosing Emotional Trigger
Now that the manipulator has his groundwork set up, it’s time to find areas to exploit.
The vulnerability must align with your desired emotional trigger that prompts your planned outcome.

If you know the victim has a phobia of spiders, but you want him to leave his wife, trying to exploit that vulnerability wouldn’t work because it doesn’t align with the desired outcome.
Iago utilizes jealousy as the emotional trigger, by claiming that Desdemona is having an affair with Cassio, while exploiting Othello’s racial insecurities to justify his case.
He suggested that Desdemona, because she’s white, is incapable of loving a black man because of the racial difference—
That after the initial infatuation phase, due to the feeling of novelty and forbiddenness of the love, she would eventually leave him for a white man.

Without a doubt, this is a perfectly executed orchestration, playing on Othello’s vulnerabilities to the maximum.
However, the key to Iago is beyond psychological acuity, but also timing.

3. The Power of Hints
If he deployed everything in a monologue in front of Othello, it’ll definitely sound crazy and unhinged, but if it’s delivered over a long period of time…

This is done by providing hints, from which Othello draws his own conclusions, letting Othello do much of the work of destroying himself.
Eventually, Othello literally collapsed from being fucked so hard mentally.

Iago aimed to dominate and control Othello’s mind, to play with Othello’s soul, and he did—causing him to embody the word “insanity”.
