The Ultimate Natural Skincare Guide
Popular skincare ingredients, what they do, natural alternatives & how to use them.
Before diving in, I want to emphasise that some ingredients are more important than others (imo).
There are 3 ingredients that I will call my β€˜holy trinity’ - these ingredients protect the skin barrier & this is something everyone of ALL skin types should be prioritising.
The rest are additional or β€˜nice to have’. They are for people with specific skin conditions & it may help with the healing process.
Please remember that you cannot truly heal your skin without a healthy skin barrier.
So, with that said, let’s dive in!
My Holy Trinity:
β€’ Ceramides
β€’ Triglycerides (fatty acids)
β€’ Cholesterol
Additional / Nice to Have:
β€’ Salicylic Acid
β€’ Vitamin C
β€’ Retinol or Vitamin A
β€’ Vitamin E

CERAMIDES
Fantastic for protecting the skin barrier. A healthy skin barrier = strong, healthy skin = little to no skin problems.
Suitable for all skin types.
Found naturally in: Jojoba oil – don’t be scared of the word β€˜oil’, it’s actually a wax! Our skin’s natural oils (called β€˜sebum’) is also a waxy substance.
How to use: Pretty simple, just rub it on yo face.
TRIGLYCERIDES
Triglycerides are a fatty acid. Moisturisers often contain fatty acids because they act as an emollient, which helps prevent moisture loss & therefore deeply hydrates the skin.
Fatty acids also help protect the skin barrier.
Suitable for all skin types.
Found naturally in: Beef tallow (or beef fat – fatty acids in fat?!? whAT?)
How to use: As a moisturiser
CHOLESTEROL
Cholesterol is somewhat similar to triglycerides. It acts as an emollient and deeply hydrates the skin.
It also helps to improve the spreadability of products and helps to protect the skin barrier.
Suitable for all skin types.
Found naturally in: beef tallow (this again!?! Yes, sorry, it’s my holy grailπŸ’πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ)
How to use: As a moisturiser

SALICYLIC ACID
A popular choice for acne-prone skin. Salicylic acid is used to exfoliate the skin, unclog pores and reduce acne.
Found naturally in: strawberries - give your skin a sweet treat!
How to use: cut it in half and rub on your face OR mash it up with a fork, add some honey and use it as a face mask. Wash after both methods.
VITAMIN C
A popular choice for blemished or hyperpigmented skin. Vitamin C helps to fade dark spots by inhibiting melanin production – this helps to brighten the skin.
Vitamin C has also been shown to reduce the appearance of acne scars.
Found naturally in: aloe vera gel, berries & citrus fruits – I recommend natural aloe vera gel. Avoid lemon as it’s very acidic.
How to use: rub aloe vera gel on your face OR (if you want to be fancy) use orange peel powder mixed w/ greek yoghurt or honey as a mask or cleanser.
RETINOL
Also known as a vitamin A, retinol helps to speed up skin cell turnover, brighten the skin and reduce fine lines & wrinkles.
Found naturally in: rosehip oil
How to use: again, rub it on your face – who’d have thunk it!
VITAMIN E
Considered a powerful anti-inflammatory skincare ingredient.
Studies have shown that Vitamin E helps to prevent inflammation after UV exposure – in not so sciency terms, it helps to calm the skin after a sunburn.
Found naturally in: you probably guessed it - yep, aloe vera gel (al-oe again)!
How to use: put the aloe leaf in the fridge or freezer for a few minutes for a deeper cooling effect, cut the leaf open and rub on the affected areas.
FINAL NOTE:
I strongly believe our skin is a reflection of our internal health. Exercise helps to get your blood circulating which is crucial for healthy skin, sweating unclogs your pores, eating foods rich in omega-3 regulates your skin’s oil production.
Healthy skin is so much more than the ingredients you put on your face. Please keep that in mind when looking into skincare.
