Elon Musk with Tesla.
Steve Jobs with Apple.
Jeff Bezos with Amazon.
Three different founders, one thing in common…
Using brand stories to build cult followings.
Here’s how they did it (so you can do the same):
🧵
Some quick background. I’m not just some guy on Twitter who writes about big brands. I run an email marketing agency with over $100 million in revenue driven.
That means I’ve used this method myself and made a lot of sales with it.
Anyway, let’s get started…
Like any story, the most important element of a brand story is its characters.
In most cases, the main character is the person you’re selling to.
Who they are and what they want are paramount.
Who you are is less important but still relevant (especially for personal brands).
The basis of your brand story will be helping the main character get what they want.
If your target customer wants to get healthy, the story will be about helping them get healthy.
You can apply this to any goal.
It’s not as simple as getting your audience from A to B, though.
That’s because every market has competition.
Efficacy is good, but you need more.
That starts with personality.
The tone of your brand, the color scheme, what you believe in.
Think about a typical story you’d see in a movie or read in a book.
Your ideal customer is the main character, but there’s almost always more than one character.
Your brand is a secondary character. It's their sidekick. Sidekicks aren’t just useful. They have personalities.
So, meld what your customers want with who you are.
So rather than just helping people get healthy, you help them get healthy without the tough-talking culture of conventional fitness companies.
That’s what Planet Fitness has done extremely well (whether you like them or not).
The formula is basically:
- Know what your customers want
- Build something that gives it to them
- Have a personality/story behind you too
Tesla’s story is helping you join the future of transportation (electric, high-tech, etc).
Apple’s story is helping you live a better life through high-performance technology products that are also easy to use.
Amazon’s story is making online shopping as fast, easy, and affordable as possible.
When creating a story for your brand, go down that list from above.
Combine what your customer wants with your solution and a dash of brand personality.
That’s how you build a brand story that’s impossible to ignore.
That's everything.
