Here's what you do with your thoughts while meditating :
People say meditation is difficult. But what they really mean is they can't bear their thoughts.
So they ask how to stop their thoughts.
First of all, I want you to understand that the idea that you need to shut your brain to be on the spiritual path is pure nonsense.
People ask me, how do I stop my thoughts.
I ask them, why do you want to stop your thoughts.
They say, because that is what you are supposed to do... You have to be thought free to meditate..
Ummm.. who revealed this secret to you ?
After millions of years of evolution we developed the ability to think which differentiates us from an ape.
We can plan for the future, we can think of the past, we can think about the cosmos.
The quality that makes us unique has become a hindrance for a lot of us.
Why so?
Are you worried about your nose breathing ? or are you worried about your intestines digesting ?
Then why this prejudice towards your brain ?
What hearing is to ears, seeing is to eyes, smelling is to nose, thinking is to mind.
But you are only worried about your thoughts.
You are worried about your thoughts because your thoughts are garbage.
If your mind was spewing out secrets of the universe would you want your thoughts to stop ?
If every moment of your day you had ecstatic thoughts would you want your thoughts to stop ?
You are thoughts are just the byproduct of what you feed your mind.
If your feed your mind with crap your thoughts will be crap there’s nothing much you can do about it.
In order for your thoughts not to be crap. You have to change what you feed your mind.
Your thoughts are not even real. Yet you are so fixated on those.
You have made your thoughts a problem because you think you are your thoughts.
Because you are so deeply identified with your thought process it has started bothering you.
Understand this -- having thoughts is not a problem. Getting entangled in those thoughts is.
Do this the next time you sit to meditate -
1. Get a thought notice it.
2. If its important tell your mind you will get back to it.
3. Every time you get a thought you ignore the thought and get back to your focus.
You get 100 thoughts you bring your focus back 100 times.
When you practice this repeatedly-- get a thought, not swayed by it, get back to your focus.
It will become a habit.
Now imagine you are working and a wild thought appears. and you simply move away and get back to your work.
Isn't that what you have wanted all along ?
And soon there will be a time when your mind will generate thoughts but you will be able to see beyond those thoughts.
But for that you need to practice.
Let your mind do what it wants, let your intestine do what it wants, let your nose do what it wants.
You just practice.
