8 (Uncommon) Copywriting Books That'll Take Your Writing To The Next Level:
🧡
Some of these are books you've never heard of, and that's a good thing.
After all...
If you’ve been in the game for a while, you've probably read a lot of popular books from the "Copywriter Canon"...
Titles like:
- Tested Advertising Methods by John Caples
- The Robert Collier Letter by Robert Collier
- The Boron Letters by Gary Halbert
- How to Write a Good Advertisement by Victor Schwab
These books are ok.
But if you really want to get good, you've got to broaden your horizons.
Instead, I've got eight books that I think will make you a much more effective copywriter.
Let's dive in...
1. Confession of an Advertising Man by David Ogilvy
Why read this book?
- It'll clue you in on "big ad agency" thinking
- He not only talks about the craft, but about agency life
- It'll help you think bigger
2. Breakthrough Advertising by Eugene Schwartz
Why you should read this book?
- You'll learn lots of important techniques: gradualization, dimensionalization, etc...
- You’ll understand market awareness levels and sophistication levels giving you an edge over other writers.
3. Convert 2.0 by Frank Kern
I have mixed feelings about Kern. But I did learn some useful things in this one.
Why you should read this book?
- Understand the difference between practical value and intrinsic value
- Campaign architecture
- Written for the internet
- Positioning, process, promotion
- Teaches you how to sell high ticket stuff and info products
4. The Book of Gossage
(This is probably one of my favorites and... you’ve probably never heard of this one.)
Gossage was half Don Draper, half-troll.
He believed in writing an ad that generated the most amount of response with the fewest placements.
He used his copy chops to save a Redwood Forrest and stop them from damming the Grand Canyon.
He zagged when everyone zigged... and his ads always stood out in a sea of noise.
He was one of the only writers that Ogilvy envied.
His headlines were ridiculous... he was a true genius.
He is my inspiration as a writer.
5. My Life in Advertising by Claude Hopkins
Scientific Adverting (Claude's other book) is decent. Probably good to read if you're new to the craft.
But My Life in Advertising is where Claude talks about his story.
He rose from being an unknown guy to literally becoming the most famous (and highest-paid) ad man in the world, at the time.
It's an interesting journey that Claude went through, even though he did wind up selling some seedy (and misleading) products.
I felt like learning about how he climbed the mountain was more useful for me than the concepts he taught in Scientific Advertising. But that's just me personally.
Maybe it'll help you think bigger, too.
6. Win Bigly by @ScottAdamsSays
Why you should read this book?
- You'll learn how to ratchet up the persuasiveness of your messaging
- You’ll understand psychological effects like cognitive dissonance and confirmation bias
- It's a fun (and hypnotizing) read
@ScottAdamsSays 7. The Bencivenga 100 Seminar by Gary Bencivenga
@ScottAdamsSays Why read this book?
- It's a $5,000 masterclass in DR copywriting
- The power of proof
- Bencivenga Persuasion Equation
- Understand the power of crafting good offers and using your copy to DEMONSTRATE rather than just make promises
@ScottAdamsSays 8. Flip The Script by @orenklaff
Why you should read this book?
- The Flash Roll technique is MONEY
- Teaches you about framing and objection handling
- You'll learn techniques you can use in your sales calls and copywriting

9. Client Acquisition by Chris Orzechowski (literally me!!!)

@ScottAdamsSays @orenklaff 10. Scale While You Sleep
