Having watched today's segment of the morning show involving @DavidHundeyin & @agbajalingo_, here's my conclusion: there's an ongoing power tussle between four demographics in Nigeria. Gen Z & Gen Y on one hand, against Gen X & the Baby-boomers on the other.
Baby boomers are the septuagenarians/octogenarians who were opportune to climb to the apices of power during the military regime, while assuming almost absolute control of the means of production; they enriched themselves, their families & their cohorts,
& in order to perpetuate their hold on power (while maintaining their control of resources) they empowered a new generation of tyrants who'd be subservient to them until their demise - Gen X. Gen X are the gatekeepers like Dele Alake, Sam Omatseye, Reno,
etc who're between their mid-forties & sixties; they cut across all ethnic groups, vocations & religions, & were born at the peak of military rule. So it's not surprising that they got accustomed to looking up to "strong men" who they came to perceive as
being capable of leading (or more appropriately, ruling) a multi-ethnic/multi-religious country like Nigeria, men who won't hesitate to assassinate perceived enemies/threats, who gag free speech whimsically & feel no empathy overseeing a subdued citizenry.
Enter Gen Y (millennials) who were born at the tail end of military rule & hardly suffered the brunt of its negativities, while the internet was at its early stages & decentralization of information was about to become a thing. Combine that with Nigeria's
transition to democracy & it becomes apparent that in Gen Y, an alchemy of freedom & a global mindset was birthed where individuals feel powerful enough to challenge the status quo & express their individualities in ways that are far removed from the
tyrannical atmospheres that their predecessors had become slaves to. Gen Z are a more recent & advanced version of the millennials & unlike the latter who may be inclined to do the biddings of the gatekeepers (for personal gain) they're more tilted towards
rebellion & won't be tolerant of any attempts to stifle their freedoms & their desires for self-expression. We should expect either of these two outcomes; a scenario where the GenX/Baby-boomer demographics sheath their swords & accept that there are new
sheriffs in town, or they continually bare their fangs to the point of creating a totalitarian society where the younger generation would end up being absolutely smashed. The battle has only just begun & young ones are ready for the eventualities.
