Robin Moore—author of The French Connection & The Green Berets—owned a property in Jamaica called Blue Hole, which the CIA explored as a possible (or actual?) launchpad for an op to smuggle Cuban defector Manolo Ray back into the country and topple Castro. archives.gov
Robin Moore was greeted by CIA agent Jack Reed who presented him with a "recognition symbol" and instructed Moore to refer to Manolo as "George King."
Though finding Blue Hole a suitable base of operations and Moore a well-trained guerilla fighter, Reed also found him to be a womanizer, alcoholic and braggart with "a burning desire to be known as a tough, two-fisted, rip-roaring soldier of fortune."
Whether launched from Blue Hole or not, the operation was a true comedy of errors. Ray, the Juan Guaido of the '60s, never made it to Cuba. Instead, he and his crew got picked up and arrested by the Bahamian Coast Guard. content.time.com
NB: While I found the Moore document in the latest JFK files dump, it's not new. This current version, however, appears more legible than the previous version (#relPageId=4" target="_blank" rel="noopener" onclick="event.stopPropagation()">maryferrell.org), and the story doesn't seem to be particularly well-known. Anyway, it was new to me 🤷
