I have something to share with you guys this morning. It might or might not be meaningful to you, but I’d share still.
A long time ago, (2012 precisely). I had just started my masters programme at UI and there was a long ASUU strike.
So, I went to learn catering services.
Actually, I had tried Fashion design first but after scaling through the first 2 weeks which I felt were pretty easy, I stopped getting it. There was maths involved and that is not my life please 😭
I’d gist you guys the full story of my failed endeavour later.
So, back to the catering place.
My mum took me there to register and the woman said she’d charge a certain fee. She was even kind to give a discount because her child is my lil sister’s friend.
The agreement was that I’d pay the most part before starting then balance later.
We did just that and I resumed the class.
It was stressful at first but I later got a hang of it and was learning as much as I could.
After a while, the strike got called off and I had to resume school. This meant I couldn’t go there anymore as I moved to the hostel.
It wasn’t easy to juggle both ( ask around about UI masters, o bloody).
Anyway, life went on and I couldn’t go to the catering class again. I referred a friend there because I trusted the woman’s teaching.
I always wished to return to conclude my training but I couldn’t.
After my Masters programme, I moved to Lagos and life went on.
However, anytime I remembered this woman, I’d remember that I was owing her some money, which was the balance of my training with her.
It wasn’t sha her fault that I didn’t come to conclude it.
So, it wasn’t okay to hold on to her money ( that was how my own thinking went sha)
I started looking for her number but there was nowhere to get it. I even asked my mum to go to her place if she could but the timing of her work didn’t align with the woman’s open hours.
Fast forward to 2020 (8 years after o😭), I got her number through the friend I had earlier referred to her. She told me they jammed somewhere or so.
I was glad to reach out to her And these chats ensued.
You guys can imagine the ease and relief I felt after that.
Look at how happy she was. The prayers, everything. It was money she wasn’t expecting and she couldn’t hide the joy.
Maybe it even came at a time she really needed some money for something , who knows?
It wasn’t a lot of money but it kept hanging in my mind somehow.
I don’t like owing people. Be it that they loaned me something or I promised to give them something.
If it ever happens, I try my best to sort it as soon as I can.
This Sunday morning, I’m imploring us to please pay up debts as soon as we can afford to.
Even the ones that you were owing long ago, try to reach out to the person and sort it except they willingly told you they’d forgo it.
Don’t assume that it is no longer a debt just because it’s been a while and the person isn’t saying anything.
Reach out to them and pay up.
Also, when you owe people, don’t pay some of it and assume they’d forgo the rest.
If you took 12k from someone as a loan, don’t pay 10k and expect that they don’t need 2k.
Give them all of their money back, please.
The best thing is to avoid owing people money. But there are instances where you can’t help it, so please be a good person by paying it back immediately you have the means and as promised.
Don’t assume people have money so they don’t need the one you owe them. Don’t do that.
May God ease our affairs and help us to pay up our debts as soon as possible.
I hope we learnt something. Thank you for reading.
