Men struggling to break habits read this ;
You focus too much on the habit never realising what you truly wage war against. All addictions are dopamine addictions, The imbalance in brain chemistry and the neuroplastic change from years of repetition is what you need to fight. Remember this.
To win a war against your addicted self, you need to devote your mind, body and soul to a new passion. Only when one finds a new path that triumphs over his desire to remain an addict will he find a way through the fog of abuse.
Your habits cause CREB & DeltaFosB protein accumulation in your brain. CREB builds your tolerance and makes you want higher doses. DeltaFosB increases cravings for repeated hits. Both proteins can be dissolved with abstinence & lifestyle changes. This is crucial for recovery.
Addiction is a brain disorder of learning and memory. It has nothing to do with who you are, your morals, your ethics, and your values. Genetics and environment make you prone to addiction and changes in your brain brand this new identity onto you. It's all science.
Recovery means healing by abstinence. To fully recover you need to abstain from ALL dopamine spikes enough to let your brain heal, in its own time. You can speed up this process with significant lifestyle changes. Willpower fails. You need the right systems & coping mechanisms
Recovery is self-care. An addict has low self-esteem, he is fearful, he is anxious, he is hopeless. Recovery comes when you pursue the truth of who you are and realise you've lost your path. When this spark of emotion is fanned into an inferno of change, a man will move mountains
You relapse because you don't know how to handle cravings. At the very first sight of them, you fold and are beaten to your knees. Train to be aware. Then deploy a pre-determined system or technique that is designed to keep your neo-cortex active. This method is foolproof.
Sit down and have an introspection exercise. Be ruthlessly honest about who you are, where you are going and how you feel about it. Now list out all the values and principles you want to live by. This will be your new identity. Your goal is to come as close to this as you can.
To break your habits you need to train your brain to be aware of 3 things, Situations, Thoughts & Emotions. Meditation twice a day and learning to practice the OODA loop of awareness training will help. Observe, Orient, Decide & Act. Mindless living will drag you towards relapse
You relapse to your thoughts because you fuse with them. You accept the thought as your reality and let it lead you by hand. Reject this. Your goal is to de-fuse from any thought that does not serve you. You do this by learning how to let them pass by and being an observer
At any point in your journey to sobriety, your goal is to put yourself in the best possible position that allows for recovery. This means being proactive and cutting out any thing, person or event that compromises your position. Nobody will do it for you. You have to take charge.
Progressive muscle relaxation is a simple exercise that will help you release tension and fight cravings. This is very true for stress-induced cravings. Especially if you have a problem with smoking or pornography. Simply lie down and clench relax every muscle shown in the image
A man who desires recovery needs a lifestyle upgrade. You cannot expect to function at the same wavelength and expect change. You need to evolve. You need to lift weights, eat right, go out and get some sun, meditate, read, learn, create, absorb, practice, engage, build & thrive
Never forget who you are. You may have lost your path, but your spirit is still dormant, untarnished. Call out to your conscience and it will respond. It is waiting for the day you will wake up and seek to be your true self again. A warrior sleeps inside of you. Wake him up.
Solitude will weaken your resolve. The devil whispers to you when you are not in good company. Family, friends, brothers, loved ones. They are your strength. Tell them you are struggling and you need help. Blood is your greatest ally. They will not forsake you. Trust them.
12 weeks of dedication will have you see a side of you, you never thought possible. I know what I'm talking about. I've had scores of men transform their lives under my watch. This is not impossible. All you need to do is get started and take it one day at a time. Godspeed.
