If we consider Śankar-digvijaya (by Vidyāranya) to be true, then
prior to entering the body of the king, Padmapāda ( Śiṣya of Śankara) shares ancient story of Matsyendranātha and Gorakṣa doing same.
Thus, Both Gorakṣa and Matsyendranātha existed prior to Ādi Śankarāchārya.
If this incident mentioned in Shankar Digvijaya is fictional & if Sankara Digvijaya is fictional then it's likely possible that writer tried to show Śankara also as *great Yogi* as famous yogis of his time, (Gorakṣa and Matsyendranātha): basically godly attr. build for Śankara.
Now questions is do really Gorakṣanāth existed prior to Śankara? Most likely NO. And Gorakṣa timeline can be ranged in between 10th to 13th CE.
By this logic, Śankar-digvijaya is 100% make up. (Especially this story)
